Play Strindberg

by Friedrich Dürrenmatt

When Edgar met Alice they seemed to fall in loath instantly. They lived unhappily ever after in a relationship built on enmity and hostility. The peaceful equilibrium of this situation is obliterated by the arrival of Kurt, Alice's old flame. The rest of the proceedings are characterized by great wit, unexpected cruelty, and surprising conclusions. Will Alice leave Edgar? Will Kurt seduce Alice? Will Edgar challenge Kurt to a duel? Is this is a tale of an officer and a gentleman driven to the verge of madness by an actress of no talent or a story of a contented family destroyed? Friedrich Dürrenmatt's ironic take on August Strindberg's masterpiece The Dance of Death will make you laugh and squirm at the same time. What Strindberg saw as tragedy, Dürrenmatt delivers as a comedy. Clive Barnes called it “Bright, dazzling... a play that is just what any theatrical repertory doctor would order.”
